The Town Centre of Kungsbacka

Like most towns in Halland, Kungsbacka dates from the 13th century. This period saw the growth and in creasing prosperity of the North German Hanseatic towns, and their expanding commerce and trade gave rise to new trading centres along the coastline of southern Sweden.

In 1846 the old wooden town of Kungsbacka was more or less destroyed by fire, which left the majority of the town's 500 inhabitants homeless. Today, only two houses remain from the time before the fire.

Kungsbacka was rebuilt around the turn of the century and the inner town with its pastel-coloured wooden houses has an idyllic charm. The wooden church by the square was consecrated in 1875. The position of earlier churches can be seen from the paving on the square. Since 1981, a sculpture "the Tree of Life" by Lars Stocks embellishes the square.
